![]() The stuff we had plugged into surge protectors survived ok. Neighbor who saw it said that the crown of our roof was glowing orange. We weren’t home, but my dad (who was visiting), was in the basement working. Our house was struck by lightning in 2005. If your house is hit directly, then you have more things to worry about, like fire. In a lightning storm close enough to hit you, unplug your valuable, sensitive electrical items entirely. Lightning is quick (who’da thunk?) and the surge protectors will likely not be fast enough to catch the surge in time. the voltages from lightning are in the millions, and too high for them and your home ground to deal withī. It’s possible you suffered a “close miss” that caused damage, and you had good, fast protectors. You were lucky: surge protectors do not generally protect against lightning. But that was probably true just 'cause it says “iGO” on the front and nothing they make ever performs as advertised. You’re probably going to be disappointed plugging your speakers into this. They count on using the battery as a buffer for the 30 minute interval between checking to see what might have been connected. Apple and AT&T advertise their chargers as near-zero consumers when disconnected from the associated device.įrom what I gather of the reviews of this device elsewhere, it doesn’t work very well with devices that you want to turn on right away. If your charger uses a switching supply, like most do these days, it’s likely your vampire power for your charger is MUCH lower than a half a watt, since switching power supplies require a load to begin converting power. Assuming that this thing has 10 grams of copper in it, you would need to use it for 83 days before you’ve saved the 1 kWh of electricity to cover what it took to smelt that copper (not counting mining and transportation energy. The average phone charger with a transformer uses about a half a watt when disconnected. Try to think less of the money you’re saving and more about the coal that won’t be going into the atmosphere needlessly.
